
Oct 20, 2019 — The College of Arts and Sciences recently held its annual Faculty Conference at the Eugenio Lopez Center in Antipolo, Rizal with 120 CAS faculty members in attendance.
The conference introduced new techniques and teaching methods which could be utilized to meet academic needs and enhance the learning experiences of UP Manila students. New courses of study were also introduced which would enable UP Manila students to specialize in areas that would benefit the general public and offer career opportunities for them in the future.
With the theme, “Enhancing Quality Education of UP Manila Students”, the conference had the following objectives: assess student and faculty satisfaction with content and implementation of 10 revised CAS undergraduate programs and institutionalize the incorporation of outcome-based and modern teaching and learning approaches in the conduct of all undergraduate subjects as reflected in course syllabi.
The participants were given updates on infrastructure work by Arch. Rosalie Flores-Bernardo of the Campus Planning, Development and Maintenance Office (CPDMO), UP Manila. Dr. Alyssa Alampay, Asst. Vice President for Academic Affairs for Quality Assurance discussed Quality Assurance (QA) and its Role in the UP System. Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. Nymia Pimentel-Simbulan talked on the UP Manila Quality Assurance Plan while Prof. Erlyn Sana of the National Teacher Training Center for the Health Professions (NTTCHP) spoke on Building a QA Culture in Academic Programs. The current status of QA at CAS and implementing its QA plan was discussed by Dr. Edanjardo Marquez, Chair, CAS QA Committee.
A lecture on Constructing an Outcome-Based (OBE) Syllabus was delivered by NTTCHP Dean Dr. Melflor Atienza who emphasized the importance of adapting teaching methods that would best meet the intended learning goals and student learning outcomes of UP Manila students through development and utilization of an OBE syllabus. Workshops on QA and OBE Construction were held. Faculty representatives of each department/course program reported the results of their group discussions.
