WHO Regional Director for the Western Pacific Region Dr. Shin Young-Soo and UPM Chancellor Dr. Carmencita Padilla during the former’s visit.

World Health Organization Regional Director for the Western Pacific Region Dr. Shin Young-Soo paid a courtesy call to UP Manila Chancellor Carmencita Padilla on August 5, 2016. The two oriented each other on their respective institution’s programs and services with a view to exploring more collaborations in the future, particularly in professorship exchange. WHO and UPM officials are known experts in different health fields.

Under the administration of Dr. Shin Young-Soo, the WHO designated the UP Manila College of Nursing (CN) as WHO Collaborating Center (WHOCC) for Leadership in Nursing Development. As WHOCC, CN pioneered the Cambodia Nursing Bridging Program where CN faculty members and PGH nursing specialists trained nursing faculty of the University of Health Sciences in Cambodia. This UPCN designation started in 2004.

Dr. Shin Young-Soo is into his 2nd term as WHO Regional Director for the WPR. During his term in 2012, the world’s remaining National Teacher Training Center for the Health Professions (NTTCHP) were recognized as WHO Regional Education Development Centers. The first was NTTCHP in UP Manila and the other one was the Seoul National University School of Medicine in South Korea. This led UP Manila to train health professions teachers in Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos People’s Democratic Republic.
