MANILA, Philippines — The University of the Philippines Manila achieved a significant breakthrough on the global academic stage, securing the 447th spot in the latest U.S. News and World Report Best Global Universities rankings.
The premier health sciences institution was the only university in the Philippines to break into the prestigious global top 500 list, which evaluates 2,250 higher education institutions across more than 100 countries.
UP Manila pushed past its previous global placement at #479 in 2025 to #447 in 2026. This milestone is especially significant as the global recognition comes while the university celebrates the University of the Philippines’ 118th Foundation Week.
This continuous multi-year ascent underscores the university’s aggressive focus on academic excellence, robust medical research, internationalization, and expanding inter-local collaborations with Local Government Units (LGUs), State Universities and Colleges (SUCs), and private higher education institutions, solidifying its place as the absolute top-ranking Philippine institution on the global index.
Central to this achievement is the university’s implementation of the AGILE framework which stands for Academe-Government-Industry Leadership Engagement. Instituted under the university’s strategic administration, the AGILE framework breaks down traditional academic silos, driving UP Manila to proactively reach out and collaborate with critical public and private stakeholders. By utilizing this ecosystem to align academic training directly with government needs and industry demand, UP Manila ensures its immense human resources and research capabilities actively advance national public health policies, strengthen local government healthcare systems, and foster nationwide innovation.
The university’s impressive climb on the world stage is driven by an unprecedented performance in the ranking system’s specific scoring metrics, where it claimed the number one spot globally in two critical research indicators.
The institution maintained its rank as first in the world for Normalized Citation Impact, a metric measuring how influential an institution’s scientific research is compared to the global average. Continuing its streak since 2025, UP Manila again ranked first for the percentage of Highly Cited Papers that are among the Top 1% Most Cited in the world. This means its scientific publications are yielding world-leading impact and relevance in their respective fields.
In addition to these top global ranks, UP Manila also placed among the world’s elite in clinical research, ranking #137 globally for its percentage of total publications within the top ten percent of most-cited papers, and securing the #202 spot worldwide in the specific subject ranking for Clinical Medicine.
Also this year, UP Manila ranked #1642 in the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), several notches up from #1677 in 2025.
Behind the international metrics, global awards, and high-impact publications is a deep-seated commitment to the nation.
Driven by extensive international research collaborations, inter-local alliances, and major clinical trials, this multi-year climb directly serves the Filipino public. Every scientific breakthrough, policy recommendation, and medical innovation generated by UP Manila translates directly into better clinical care, accessible medicine, and life-saving healthcare advancements for communities across the Philippines.
