The University of the Philippines Manila Crèche highlighted the importance of age-appropriate household chores in children’s growth and development during the university’s flag ceremony on Oct. 26, 2026 sponsored by Crèche and the Cash Office ahead of the observance of Children’s Month in November.
“Ang pagtitiwala sa mga bata na gampanan ang mga gawaing-bahay na angkop sa kanilang edad ay nagpapatibay ng kanilang awtonomiya o kakayahang kumilos nang may kalayaan at pananagutan. Nakatutulong din ito upang malinang ang pagiging matulungin, malasakit sa kapwa o empatiya, at kasiyahan sa buhay,” said Crèche Faculty Coordinator Dr. Vanessa Maria Torres-Ticzon.
Established in 1994 by former UP Manila Chancellor Dr. Perla Santos Ocampo, the UP Manila Crèche provides preschool facilities for the children of university employees. It supports early childhood development while helping working parents balance their professional and family responsibilities.

Household chores as a foundation for children’s growth and development
Dr. Torres-Ticzon discussed how involving children in household tasks can help develop independence, empathy, and a sense of responsibility. She emphasized that chores should match children’s developmental stages and abilities.
Household responsibilities can also help children develop frustration tolerance, emotional resilience, time management, delayed gratification, problem-solving skills, and task initiation. Completing tasks gives children opportunities to experience accomplishment and build confidence in their abilities.
Rather than viewing household chores solely as obligations or ways to reduce adults’ workloads, families can use them to teach children practical skills and prepare them for greater independence.

University updates
Vice Chancellor Johanna Patricia Cañal expressed gratitude for the university’s recent achievements and blessings, including UP Manila’s reported ranking as the 8th university in Southeast Asia in the U.S. News & World Report Rankings, the 100% passing rates of the College of Pharmacy and College of Medicine in their respective board examinations, and the inclusion of UP Manila in the 2024 Government Performance-Based Bonus (PBB). She also announced that monetization payments for personnel who had applied were being credited. As the university approached the holiday season, she encouraged personnel to remain thankful for these accomplishments.

Commitment to service and excellence
Administrative Officer Shiela Beth Ngoho delivered the closing remarks on behalf of Cash Office Chief Elsie Bolambao. She reminded university personnel that the Cash Office could assist with cash-related concerns, banking transactions, and payments. She also thanked the children who led the morning prayer and congratulated the awardees ahead of the Gawad Chancellor ceremony on Oct. 27, 2026.

“Excellence is not something we claim. Excellence is something people experience through us. Keep serving with purpose,” Ngoho said.
