
April 30, 2019 — To celebrate the 46th year of the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Social Sciences, the Area Studies Program, in cooperation with the Manila Studies Program and Organization of Area Studies Majors, held a lecture and book launch as a tribute to retired UP Manila Professor Cristina E. Torres on April 10, 2019.
The lecture entitled “Ethical Issues in Social Science Research in the Asia Pacific” was delivered by Prof. Torres. Reactors were Prof. Rolando G. Talampas, College Secretary of the UP Diliman Asian Center; Dr. Ma. Paula G. Sioco, CAS Associate Professor and former Associate Dean for Planning and Development; and Dr. Eva Maria Cutiongco-Dela Paz, Executive Director of the National Institutes of Health.
The book “Social Sciences, Health, and Ethics: Papers Celebrating Cristina E. Torres,” edited by Mary Dorothy dL. Jose, Jerome A. Ong, and Atoy M. Navarro, is a collection of papers written by people who, in one way or another, had the opportunity of working closely with “Mama Tina,” as she is fondly called by her colleagues. Prof. Torres now serves as Regional Coordinator of the Forum for Ethical Review Committees in Asia-Pacific. The event was capped by the relaunching of the Research Ethics Study Group by Dr. Jacinto Blas V. Mantaring.
