The University of the Philippines and Manila HealthTek Inc. (MTek) entered into a partnership agreement for the use of the trademark for a biomedical telemetry device that aims to improve access to quality healthcare in isolated and disadvantaged areas through a telehealth technology developed by Filipino engineers and medical experts.
The trademark licensing agreement authorizes the use of the trademark for RxBox, a device capable of measuring vital signs and transmitting data through the web for telemedicine referrals, supporting patient monitoring, data capture, and remote healthcare services.
“We are celebrating a Filipino innovation that has evolved and continues to find its purpose serving our world,” UP President Angelo A. Jimenez said during the ceremonial signing activity between the University of the Philippines and MTek
on Sept. 29, 2026, at UP Manila’s Museum of a History of Ideas.

The pilot version of RxBox established the vision of its creators to connect quality healthcare solutions to underserved communities. The system supports electronic health records, initial assessment and referral to specialists, and measures and records blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen level, temperature, ECG, and maternal-fetal data, and transmits information to doctors. Previously, the team manufactured and deployed 1,000 RxBox units to local clinics in selected local government units, such as in CALABARZON, helping healthcare workers assess referral needs. The RxBox units were later deployed to referral centers during the pandemic for patient monitoring, which led to strategic care decisions.
The agreement was signed by University of the Philippines President Atty. Angelo A. Jimenez and MTek CEO and Founder, Dr. Raul V. Destura. The MTek official said the organization is gearing up to develop the “RxBox Next Gen,” which is envisioned to have a wider reach in support of the government’s Universal Health Care program.

The milestone was witnessed by leaders in the government and academic sector including UP Manila Chancellor Michael Tee, Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension, Dr. Leslie Michelle M. Dalmacio; UP Manila Director of the Technology Transfer and Business Development Office (TTBDO) Maria Eliza R. Aguila; College of Medicine (CM) Professor and RxBox Telemetry Inventor, Dr. Portia Grace Fernandez; UP System TTBDO Director and RxBox Telemetry Inventor, Luis G. Sison; CM Professor and RxBox Telemetry Inventor, Dr. Alvin B. Marcelo; MTek Inc. SVP for Administration and Chief Administrative Officer Lemuel G. Petronio; MTek. Administrative Officer Cassandra Yvovel L. de Leon; DOST Undersecretary for Research and Development, Dr. Leah J. Buendia; DOST Assistant Secretary for Countryside Development, Engr. Maria Teresa Bien de Guzman, and DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum, Jr.
“This is Agham na Ramdam – science you can feel. Science that reaches the grassroots, answers our people’s needs, and makes a tangible difference every single day. The DOST backed RxBox because we believe in our Filipino scientists and engineers. We knew our communities would be better because of our work,” Sec. Solidum said.

Signatories of the agreement are aiming for continued partnership between government, the academe, and industry to scale up the adoption, commercialization, and sustainable implementation of the technology.
”Let us be relentless in developing this technology. Today, we recommit ourselves until RxBox reaches more communities and until Filipino innovation stands confidently before the world,” Engr. de Guzman said.
