In a heartfelt ceremony marked by gratitude, reflection, and recognition of their lasting contributions to medical education and public service, the UP College of Medicine (UPCM) paid tribute to its retiring faculty members. Organized by the UPCM Faculty Wellbeing and Socials Committee, the event honored eight retirees whose decades of dedication have shaped generations of Filipino physicians.
Held under the theme “Pagpupugay at Pasasalamat,” the ceremony took place on March 24, 2026, at the UPMASA Auditorium, 4th Floor, Henry Sy Sr. Medical Sciences Building.
“Their lives have been devoted to teaching, to healing, and to serving. All of you have demonstrated what it means to truly practice medicine—that is, with excellence, integrity, and compassion,” UPCM Dean Dr. Charlotte Chiong emphasized, highlighting the profound impact of the retirees on the institution and its students that helped shape generations of physicians not only rich in knowledge and skill, but in values.
Dean Chiong encouraged the retirees to remain engaged with the college in various capacities, from teaching and mentoring to contributing to academic publications and institutional initiatives.
“Your legacy lives on. Your impact does not end here. Ang inyong mga pamana ay mabubuhay na matagal tulad ng ating institusyon. You have left behind not just memories, but a strong foundation upon which future generations will continue to build,” she added.
Representing the Philippine General Hospital (PGH), Deputy Director for Health Operations Dr. Regina Berba underscored the retirees’ role not only as educators but also as mentors and compassionate healers. She noted that at PGH, they had been more than teachers—serving as steady hands in moments of uncertainty, calm voices amid chaos, and unwavering advocates for Filipino patients.
“We celebrate you; we salute you, we honor you, and we wish you joy, rest, and fulfillment in the days ahead,” Dr. Berba said.
Honoring the Retirees
The retirees were formally introduced by the heads of their respective departments, followed by tribute videos prepared in their honor.
Chancellor Michael Tee recognized the individual contributions of each retiree, citing their roles in advancing research, improving clinical practice, and strengthening institutional systems.
He also emphasized that the retirees are not only leaders in their respective fields but also mentors and pioneers whose influence continues to shape both the university and the nation:
“Ang ating mga pinararangalan ngayon are the best and brightest pioneers of our profession. On behalf of the Office of the Chancellor, I thank you for your service and honor you,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of the retirees, Dr. Darwin Dasig reflected on their shared journey in medicine, describing retirement as another milestone in a lifelong commitment to learning and service:
“I’m very grateful for the opportunity to witness firsthand the evolution and progress of medical education… all of these experiences have strengthened our college as a premier institution.”
Dr. Mary Ann Abacan, acting college secretary, shared a heartfelt message and noted that it was fitting for the retirees to be presented with the symbol of the College of Medicine, the Lady Med, whose torch continues to burn bright. She emphasized that even as they officially retire, they continue to guide the college. On behalf of the entire academic and medical community, she expressed profound gratitude for their dedication, mentorship, and service, and wished them continued health, happiness, and fulfillment in this new chapter of their lives.
