UP Manila Commemorates the 80th Anniversary of the Liberation of Manila

Dr. Francis Navarro delivered the keynote address at the “Paggunita at Pagsulong: Kumperensya sa Ika-80 Anibersaryo ng Pagpapalaya ng Maynila.”

The Manila Studies Program (MSP) of the College of Arts and Sciences, in partnership with the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) successfully organized “Paggunita at Pagsulong: Kumperensya sa Ika-80 Anibersaryo ng Pagpapalaya ng Maynila,” on Mar. 3, 2025, at the GSIS Museo ng Sining.

The conference featured discussions on various historical topics related to the Battle for the Liberation of Manila, which took place from February 3 to March 3, 1945. 

National Historical Commission of the Philippines Commissioner and Philippine Historical Association President Francis Navarro delivered the keynote address, setting the tone for a reflective and insightful event. Dr. Navarro spoke on “Echoes of War II, Voice from the Archive: Uncovering Manila’s Liberation through Historical Records.”

Dr. Mary Dorothy Jose  of UP Manila Department of Social Sciences discussed the post-war advocacy of the National Federation of Women’s Clubs; Dr. Jose Victor Torres of the De La Salle University Manila Department of History talked about the Santo Tomas Liberation Camp; Dr. Arnel Joven of the University of Asia & the Pacific Department of History shared insights on health and liberation in 1945 Manila; and Dr. Patricia Irene Dacudao of the Ateneo de Manila University Department of History delivered on the experiences of the Ateneo de Manila College during the liberation.

This conference reaffirmed UP Manila’s commitment to historical scholarship and the preservation of national memory.#
