Proving their excellence, Jasmina Anne Balmonte Lamadrid and Nicole Deszherie Manuel Recaido from the University of the Philippines Manila (UPM) College of Allied Medical Professions (CAMP) secured top spots in the June 2024 licensure examinations, bringing pride to their alma mater. Recaido secured the third highest spot in the Physical Therapy licensure exam with an impressive score of 90.95%, while Lamadrid ranked fourth in the Occupational Therapy licensure exam with an remarkable score of 80.00%.
Overcoming Challenges to Achieve Success
Reflecting on her journey, Lamadrid shared the emotional moment when she learned about her ranking. “Upon learning the news, I was overwhelmed with joy and couldn’t hold back my tears. I immediately hugged my parents, sharing the ecstatic moment with them.”
She credits her success to rigorous preparation and a tailored study routine. Enrolling in an online review center, she experimented with various learning styles and schedules to find what worked best for her. “I found that I studied more effectively by taking my own digital notes, printing them out, and annotating them while reading aloud,” Lamadrid explained. Despite the challenges, such as the inability to socialize freely, she remained committed to her goals, finding solace in the support of her family and friends.
Recaido echoed similar sentiments. “It was such a surreal feeling to see my name at the third highest spot; until now I don’t think it has fully sunk in,” she remarked.
Her preparation process involved enrolling in a review center and collaborating with her college best friend, Johanna. Despite facing illnesses and burnout during the review period, Recaido persevered with the support of her advisers and peers.
Motivation and Memorable Moments
Their time at UP Manila was marked by memorable experiences and valuable lessons. Lamadrid recounted a profound internship experience with a child, who during a tantrum hit her so hard that her mouth bled. “While the immediate situation was painful, it was a profound eye-opener. It reinforced my understanding that as an occupational therapist, my role is to help children navigate these challenges and develop essential life skills. It strengthened my resolve to do my utmost to assist these children in overcoming their difficulties and to provide comprehensive support to their families, knowing the significant impact we can make in their lives.” she said.
For her part, Recaido shared that navigating online classes presented its own set of challenges and the transition from online learning to hands-on practice during the pandemic was even more challenging. She shared that that transition has placed her in a state of deep anxiety and constant thoughts of whether she can perform her duty to her patients or not. “I remember breaking down in the restroom of one of the rotation sites during internship. This was my first rotation then, and coupled with physical exhaustion, the mental toll was too much for me at that time,” she admitted. However, these experiences ultimately strengthened her resilience and determination.
Gratitude and Lessons Learned at CAMP
Both graduates expressed deep gratitude to their professors and mentors in UP Manila. Lamadrid, despite narrowly missing out on Latin honors, used the experience as motivation to achieve more. “This experience has driven me to perform better and achieve more in my endeavors. It has taught me resilience and perseverance,” she noted. “UP-CAMP taught me all the fundamental building blocks that strengthened my foundation as an occupational therapist. These experiences helped me build my character and skill set while also allowing me to discover more about myself. I learned how to leverage my strengths to prioritize and address my clients’ needs effectively,.”
Recaido highlighted the impact of her professors, especially Professor Aila Nica Bandong, the Chair of the Department of Physical Therapy. “Her dedication to our academic and professional growth has been instrumental in shaping our careers,” she said.
“My journey of pursuing BS Physical Therapy in the College of Allied Medical Professions was not an easy one. It was filled with trials and tribulations that seemed impossible to overcome at times. However, these challenges pushed me to develop resilience, determination, and a strong work ethic. Each obstacle became a learning opportunity for each one of us and these experiences not only shaped my academic and professional abilities but also built my character, preparing me for the complexities and demands of my future career in physical therapy,” she added.
Advice for Aspiring Students
Lamadrid advises aspiring students to focus on themselves and trust in their capabilities. “Recognize your capabilities and available resources. Don’t be discouraged by difficult questions. Trust yourself and have faith in the Lord who will provide strength,” she encouraged.
Recaido emphasized the importance of resilience and seeking help when needed. “There will always be challenges coming your way, but one thing you must do is to always remain strong. Don’t hesitate to seek help from your professors and peers,” she advised.
Future Plans
Looking ahead, Lamadrid plans to fulfill her Return Service Agreement and possibly pursue a Master’s in Occupational Therapy. “I plan to utilize my knowledge by practicing as an Occupational Therapist while fulfilling my Return Service obligation. Currently, I am exploring job opportunities and volunteering services as I await the oath-taking ceremony. Additionally, I aim to raise awareness about my profession and help break the stigma surrounding individuals with special needs in both pediatric and adult settings,” she said.
For Recaido, she envisions a future in academia, aiming to mentor and inspire the next generation of physical therapy students. “It is part of the duty of an Isko to serve the community, and as a licensed physical therapist, I plan to utilize my expertise and knowledge gained from my education to make a positive impact in my community in Las Piñas. I aim to engage in community outreach programs to raise awareness about the importance of physical therapy and preventive healthcare, particularly in underserved areas. By sharing my knowledge and skills through meaningful activities, I hope to empower individuals to take charge of their health and well-being,” she shared.
CAMP achieved a 100% passing rate in both the occupational therapy and physical therapy licensure exams, significantly surpassing the national passing rates of 63.63% for physical therapy. This accomplishment underscores the college’s commitment to excellence and its role in shaping future healthcare professionals.
