UPM HUO facilitates Module 3 of Introductory Training Program on OHS

The UP Manila Healthy University Office (UPM HUO) conducted Module 3 of the Introductory Training Program on Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) on 16 January 2024 at the UP Manila Social Hall, Philippine General Hospital for the Health and Safety Committee (HSC) and Health and Safety Technical Working Groups (TWGs). Dr. Paul Michael Hernandez, Director of UPM HUO, acted as host and facilitator for the said module.

As reported in past issues of Healthscape, the OHS training program is composed of four (4) modules and were scheduled as follows:

  • Module 1: Managing Risks for Health and Safety, held on 1 August 2023;
  • Module 2: Analyzing the Priority of OHS Problem, held on 3 October, 2023;
  • Module 3: Implementing an OHS Program, held on 16 January 2024; and
  • Module 4: Celebrating Quick Wins, scheduled for 12 March 2024.

The program started with a quick recap of the activities conducted in the previous module which revolved in the operational tools of analysis in identifying priority OHS problems, which surfaced in the form of ergonomics, sanitation facilities, and ventilation, among others. Dr. Hernandez explained the development and effective use of Log Frame Matrix in crafting policies, financial plans, and Gantt Charts. The day ended with a take-home activity for the HSCs and TWGs members which they will be presenting in Module 4 on 12 March 2024. The homework comprises of refining their draft plan for a proposed OHS program, securing approval from their unit head for the initial implementation of their proposal, and instituting controls for the remaining hazards as stated in their Module 1 outputs.

The whole duration of January to March will serve as a practicum phase in the creation of an effective OHS program with their respective units.
