UPM bags highly-coveted Energy Efficiency Excellence (EEE) Award

The University of the Philippines Manila (UPM) adds another accolade to its list of achievements as it received the Energy Efficiency Excellence (EEE) Award by the Department of Energy (DOE) last December 19, 2023 at the Hilton Hotel Manila.  

This was one of 27 awards given among 360 entries from both the government and private sectors, which qualified as leading organizations in the exceptional implementation and adoption of energy efficiency and conservation programs, innovations, and practices.

The 27 awardees generated a combined total of more than 20,000-megawatt hour of energy savings, 14,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions avoided, and PhP 170.28 million worth of savings.

UP President Atty. Angelo A. Jimenez, UPM Chancellor Dr. Michael L. Tee, UPM Vice Chancellor for Planning and Development Dr. Jose V. Tecson III, and UPM Campus Planning Development and Maintenance Office (CPDMO) Chief Architect Rosalie G. Flores-Bernardo received the award on behalf of the University, with Architect Flores-Bernardo being bestowed a special citation for her role as Energy Efficiency and Conservation (EEC) Officer.

In his response on behalf of the University, Chancellor Tee expressed his appreciation of the recognition of the University’s commitment to sustainable development citing the pivotal role of the environment as a social determinant of health.  He further stated that the “award motivates us to lead in implementing exemplary practices that safeguard the environment for the promotion of better health. Inspired by this honor, we pledge to adopt more innovative and impactful approaches to ensure efficient energy use.” 

Chancellor Tee promised that UP Manila shall continue to be a champion for energy efficiency, and will go on in educating the Iskos and Iskas to be champions towards sustainability and conservation efforts as a nation, contributing towards the sustainability and conservation efforts of the nation.

Present during the awarding ceremonies were officials of the DOE led by Secretary Raphael P. M. Lotilla, Undersecretary Felix William B. Fuentebella, Undersecretary Giovanni Carlo J. Bacordo, and the members of the awards committee. #
