UP Manila Ugnayan ng Pahinungod and Partners Empower Communities: Thyroid Surgical Mission in Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro

In a meaningful stride towards community empowerment, UP Manila-Ugnayan ng Pahinungod-Health Missions Program, in collaboration with the Rotary Club University District Manila and the Provincial Government Unit of Occidental Mindoro, orchestrated a transformative Thyroid Surgical Mission from January 22 to 25, 2023, in Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro.

Directed and led by Dr. Eric SM. Talens, and coordinated by Ms. Jovel V. Dacumos with assistance from Ms. Zyreen Lois Tenorio, the Pahinungod Surgical Team brought forth their collective expertise to ensure the success of the mission.

The dedicated team, including Mr. Erwin Aurelio, Mr. Julius Rabang, Ms. Mary Grace Estigoy, Ms. Ana Allialie Del Pena, Ms. Joan Garcines, Ms. Clair Generoso, Dr. Orlino Bisquera, Dr. Nash Daniel Silava, Dr. Ivi Patrice Torres, Dr. Patrick Sunga, Dr. Leander Quilang, Dr. Rommel Vincent Manderico, Dr. Lina May Osit, Dr. Tricia Marie Naciongayo, Dr. Russell Ulysses Blancaflor, and Dr. Jethro Lee, exemplified the Pahinungod spirit of service.

The success of the mission was not only a testament to the surgical team’s dedication but also a result of the collaborative efforts involving various individuals and institutions. The Ugnayan ng Pahinungod UP Manila staff, Occidental Mindoro Provincial Hospital staff, The Medical City, Dr. Michel Alvarez, Ms. Lydia De Castro, Ms. Mary Ann Espos, Mr. Reynaldo Rubio, and the UP-PGH Departments and Units (ORSA, OPSWAB, Office of the Director, Fiscals Office, PGH Mole Lab, Department of Surgery, Department of Anesthesiology, Department of Nursing Services) played pivotal roles in ensuring the mission’s success.

Over the course of the three-day surgical intervention, the mission impacted the lives of 24 thyroid patients, highlighting the profound influence of collaborative initiatives in addressing the healthcare needs of marginalized communities.

This surgical mission exemplifies UP Manila Ugnayan ng Pahinungod’s commitment to community welfare, showcasing the transformative power of engagement and collaboration. By actively participating in such missions, the university strengthens its bonds with communities, fostering a sense of shared responsibility and making strides towards a healthier and more empowered society.
