From National Telehealth Center
As part of the 26th NIH Anniversary Conference, the National Telehealth Center of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), University of the Philippines Manila, in collaboration with the Medical Informatics Unit (MIU) of the UP College of Medicine and Senti TechLabs, Inc. (Senti AI), successfully conducted the Basic AI in Healthcare Hands-On Workshop.
Held on September 26, 2024, this inaugural workshop aimed to provide healthcare professionals and IT practitioners with foundational knowledge on AI technologies, covering topics such as generative AI, Vision AI, and their real-world applications in medical practice.
A diverse group of nine participants, which included healthcare providers, faculty members, IT officers from Metro Manila, and a representative from the Ministry of Health in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), took part in the workshop.
Empowering Healthcare Through AI
Led by Ralph Vincent Regalado, CEO and Founder of Senti AI and Dr. Iris Thiele Isip-Tan, Professor and Chair of the Medical Informatics Unit at UP College of Medicine, the workshop covered key concepts of AI, focusing on text analysis, medical imaging, and the ethical implications of AI in healthcare. Participants were introduced to Google’s Gemini model for text classification, prompting, and question-answering, alongside hands-on exercises on constructing and utilizing generative AI engines and Vision AI models for processing healthcare data.
Participants expressed positive feedback on how the workshop was tailored for healthcare professionals. One participant shared, “I like how the workshop eased into the use of AI without it being overwhelming. I’m looking forward to further training regarding AI in healthcare.”
The workshop marks an important step toward increasing AI literacy among healthcare professionals in the Philippines, showcasing AI’s potential to enhance clinical decision-making and patient outcomes. With the success of this inaugural session, UP Manila and its partners look forward to hosting more workshops aimed at advancing the use of AI in improving healthcare services in the country.
