Faculty, staff, students, healthcare providers, patients, and Japanese visitors participated in the drill, which simulated earthquake response procedures across UP Manila for the Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) on June 18, 2026, to strengthen its preparedness for earthquake disasters and enhance safety, disaster readiness, and community resilience.
The exercise began with the practice of the “Duck, Cover, and Hold” protocol, followed by the orderly evacuation of buildings to designated assembly areas. Emergency Response Teams then conducted headcounts, damage assessments, communication drills, and incident reporting activities in accordance with the University’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) protocols.
Officials and members of the Incident Management Team observed the drill and assessed the performance of various zones and response teams. While many units demonstrated calm evacuation procedures and effective guidance during evacuation, observers also identified areas for improvement, including communication systems, emergency signage, team coordination, and adherence to earthquake response protocols.
Several observations highlighted the need for additional training, clearer assignment of responsibilities, improved emergency equipment, and more realistic disaster scenarios to strengthen preparedness. The drill also underscored the importance of continuous capacity-building among emergency response personnel to ensure that individuals can effectively carry out their roles even during unexpected situations.
The NSED serves as an important opportunity for the UP Manila community to test its emergency preparedness plans, identify gaps, and enhance its ability to respond to actual disasters. The University continues to work toward maintaining a safe, prepared, and resilient campus for all.
