Representatives from Siemens Healthineers discussed the relevance of Computed Tomography (CT) systems in managing diseases during an informal lecture at the College of Nursing Auditorium on Oct. 17, 2025.

Citing relevant statistics, Dr. Philipp Fischer, global head of Computed Tomography at Siemens Healthineers, said 9 out of the 10 leading causes of death rely on CT for early diagnosis,  treatment planning, or patient monitoring.

“In the top 10 of diseases with the highest mortality, 9 out of 10 require CT for the earliest possible diagnosis,  for therapy guidance, or the follow-up of patients…The only one out of the 10 most threatening ones where CT does not play an obvious role is dementia,” he told the audience.

“The others: cardiovascular disease, stroke, neurovascular, everything around this, CT is a key role in decision making. It’s the fast, precise insight that you get about the human body that enables you to make the best possible medical decisions. It’s a real power tool, and I wish I had had it available more often in my past when I was still practicing as a doctor,” he added.

Fischer introduced Siemen’s NAEOTOM Alpha with Quantum Technology, the world’s first photon-counting CT, which he described as “revolutionary” as it offers higher resolution images with improved contrast as compared to traditional CT systems. The Photon-counting CT provides clear images of coronary arteries, calcified plaques, and stents as opposed to older CT systems that obscure crucial details.

The fireside chat was jointly organized by the Technology Transfer and Business Development Office (TTBDO) and the Office of International and Local Linkages (OILL).

A short question and answer session was moderated by Dr. Jose Rafael Marfori, assistant vice president for health advocacy and innovation of the St. Luke’s Medical Center Health Equity and Research Foundation.#
