The University of the Philippines (UP) Manila participated in the 43rd Anniversary of the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), reinforcing its commitment to advancing health research and policy translation on Mar. 17, 2025, in Pasay City.
The anniversary, themed “Building a Healthier and a Wealthier Future: Advancing Research Utilization for Greater Impact,” underscored health research’s function in fostering public health initiatives and contributing to the nation’s well-being.
College of Public Health Assoc. Prof. Romulo Nieva, Jr., and Dr. Marie Carmela Lapitan of the Institute of Clinical Epidemiology (ICE), National Institutes of Health (NIH), were featured in a panel discussion titled “Bridging Research and Policy: Stakeholder Engagement and Unveiling of Competency Tools for Research-to-Policy Translation,” where they presented and discussed the findings from a policy research project on research-to-policy translation competencies for researchers. This project is funded by PCHRD and led by Assoc. Prof. Nieva, Jr.
The event also featured the awarding of the Gelia Castillo Award for Research on Social Innovations in Health (GCARSIH), recognizing outstanding contributions in the said field. GCARSIH is co-implemented by the Program on Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Health (SIHI Philippines), under the NIH-ICE.
DOST-PCHRD has been a significant collaborator with UP Manila in advancing health research and funding research proposals aligned with the National Unified Health Research Agenda (NUHRA). This collaboration has led to innovative solutions aimed at enhancing research capabilities and addressing national health concerns.
