UPM-CAS Welcomes Visiting Professor from University of Newcastle Australia

Chancellor Dr. Michael L. Tee officially welcomed Dr. Joerg Lehmann, PhD, DABR, FAAPM, a Visiting Professor in the Department of Physical Sciences and Mathematics (DPSM), College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) as the latter paid him a courtesy call on July 1, 2024.

Prof. Lehmann is a Conjoint Professor in the School of Information and Physical Science of the University of Newcastle, Australia, and holds notable positions in medical physics, including Principal Medical Physics Specialist at the Department of Radiation Oncology, Calvary Mater Newcastle, and Deputy Director of the Institute of Medical Physics at The University of Sydney. With a distinguished career in both academia and clinical practice, Prof. Lehmann has authored 80 peer-reviewed publications, delivered 248 presentations at scientific conferences, and secured a US patent.

Prof. Lehmann is currently on-campus for three weeks to teach the “Physics of Radiation Oncology” course as part of the MS Applied Physics (Medical Physics) program. His technical expertise and clinical experience will provide students with a deep understanding of radiation oncology physics, blending theoretical knowledge with practical application.  He also delivered a few lectures virtually for a Radiation Dosimetry course during the second semester of 2023-2024.

In addition to his teaching duties, Prof. Lehmann delivered a public lecture titled “Delivering the Prescribed Dose – Quality Assurance in Radiation Oncology” on July 5, 2024 at the UPM Theater. The lecture offered valuable insights into the latest advancements and best practices in radiation oncology, benefiting students, faculty, and medical professionals alike.

During the courtesy call, Chancellor Tee encouraged Prof. Lehmann to continue his engagement with UP Manila in order to produce the needed human resource in medical physics for the country. Their discussion centered on enhancing international partnerships, developing joint programs, and securing funding for faculty and research initiatives. 

The courtesy call highlighted the mutual interest in continuing and expanding collaborative efforts between UP Manila and international institutions. Such partnerships are crucial for the continuous improvement of educational and healthcare services, ensuring that both students and professionals have access to the latest advancements and best practices in their fields.
