UP Manila garnered a significant milestone in the domain of research and in its digital footprint, evidenced by its inclusion in the Top 10 of the 2024 Webometrics Ranking of World Universities. Beyond numerical standings, the spotlight is cast on UP Manila’s accomplishments in research and its influential online visibility.

The Webometrics Ranking assesses institutions based on three pivotal dimensions: visibility (impact), excellence (scholar), and transparency (openness). UP Manila’s success in these realms not only emphasizes the influence of its research output, but also underscores its commitment to maintaining a substantial online presence and transparently disseminating knowledge through its website. The detailed breakdown reveals impressive scores of UP Manila in the metrics of Impact, Openness, and Excellence, measuring at 5785, 8368, and 2037, respectively.

In evaluating visibility, the ranking considers the number of external networks linking to the institution’s webpages, contributing to 50% of the assessment. For transparency or openness, the acknowledgment of top-cited researchers is measured through the number of citations from the Top 310 authors, with a 10% weight in the overall assessment, utilizing Google Scholar Profiles. In terms of excellence or scholarly achievement, UP Manila’s commitment is reflected in the number of top-cited papers, accounting for 40% of the evaluation, considering papers among the top 10% most cited in each of the 27 disciplines from 2018 to 2022.

Conducted biannually by the Cybermetrics Lab of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), this ranking recognizes UP Manila’s steadfast dedication to being a hub of impactful research with a robust digital presence. Beyond conventional academic measures, the focus is on the university’s role as a global contributor to advancing knowledge, utilizing its website as a crucial platform for transparently sharing research findings and fostering a global exchange of ideas.

Among the 363 higher education institutions in the Philippines, UP Manila’s noteworthy 7th place position underscores its unwavering commitment to advancing research endeavors. The aforementioned ranking of UP Manila is accompanied by a Continental Ranking of 1110th and a global rank of 3436th exemplifies its dedication to excellence in research. ■
