UP Manila to bring health simulation-based education to the Philippines

31 October 2022 — Thirty-one representatives from the University of the Philippines Manila, West Visayas State University, and Mindanao State University attended a five-day workshop at the Adelaide Health Simulation of the University of Adelaide Australia as part of the project Optimizing Simulation-Based Education (SBE) Training, Collaboration, and Research being conducted by UP Manila with the University of Adelaide.

The project aims to create SBE-centered teaching modules customized to the practices and context of the Philippines that are meant to serve as a roadmap for instructors who will deliver SBE. The staff of relevant medical, nursing, and health sciences programs will be trained to prepare their faculty members for SBE. Through the project, ongoing training, staff development, and research collaboration will be ensured in order to optimize the integration of SBE in pre- clinical instructional design, as well as inter-professional engagement.

“Partnering with the University of Adelaide will provide our teachers and students the opportunity to expand their knowledge in optimising the use of simulation-based education in health sciences education,” UP Manila Vice Chancellor for Planning and Development and Project Leader Dr. Michael Tee said.

“We are always looking for ways to collaborate and share knowledge with other institutions that will lead to positive outcomes and improve patient safety,” Associate Professor Montagu, Director of Adelaide Health Simulation said.

Establishing deployment centers in the Philippines will allow the three universities (UPM, WVSU, MSU) to provide realistic and integrated training for healthcare workers.

The project is set to be implemented in five phases over a period of two years.
