The inauguration of the University of the Philippines College of Medicine (UPCM) Postgraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM) on June 19, 2025, signaled a new era in postgraduate medical education in the country’s premier health sciences institution.
The blessing of the new PGIM was held just a day after the launch of the new National Forensics Institute, which coincided with UP’s 117th anniversary week. With over 26 graduate programs and more in the pipeline, the new facility is expected to nurture future healthcare leaders and educators from UP and across the country’s old and newly established medical schools.
“We now have more than 78 medical schools in the country…We envision that the College of Medicine would be the primary source of training for the educators in these particular universities,” Dean Charlotte Chiong said during the event at the PGIM on the 11th floor of Henry Sy, Sr. Building.
“We now envision that this particular facility that we just inaugurated would be a very happy place for our graduate students. It will actually boost their morale and perhaps inspire them to work harder on their graduate thesis.”
Dean Chiong also thanked the UP Medical Alumni Foundation for its generosity in supporting infrastructure development and equipment donations.
At the center of the new PGIM is the Victor R. Potenciano Thesis Presentation Hall, which features state-of-the-art facilities designed to foster engaging academic discourse. Students from Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Korea, and Philippines who will be participating in the first ever Fujifilm Asia-Pacific Learning Academy for Radiology Technology will be trained in the new PGIM.
The PGIM was created by law in 1939 and has since grown into a premier institution for postgraduate medical training in the Philippines.#
