Developing psychological strength is essential for navigating life’s challenges, and one effective approach is through practicing self-care.

This was the main message of Philippine General Hospital Associate Consultant, Dr. Rafael Henry Legaspi, who spoke at the UP Manila’s Museum of A History of Ideas on February 19, 2024 during a flag-raising ceremony led by the Technology Transfer Business Development Office (TTBDO) and Research Grant Administration Office (RGAO).

He likened resiliency to a muscle that can be strengthened through practice and perseverance, and asserted that facing and overcoming difficulties can fortify mental resilience. He emphasized the pivotal role of P.U.S.O. – Pakikipagkapuwa-tao (engagement with others), Ugnayan (connection), Selfcare, and Optimismo (optimism) – in augmenting one’s ability to navigate adversity.

“It’s not just about enduring hardships; it’s about thriving despite them,” he said. “It’s not about denying our emotions or pretending that everything is fine when it’s not. Rather, it’s about acknowledging our feelings, seeking support when needed, and finding healthy ways to cope with life’s ups and downs.”

He emphasized that psychological resilience doesn’t mean being invulnerable or immune to stress; rather, acknowledging emotions is vital for maintaining mental well-being.

“Life is full of challenges and obstacles, but it’s also full of opportunities for growth and transformation,” concluded Dr. Legaspi. Through cultivating psychological resilience by strengthening ourselves, nurturing support networks, staying positive, and embracing adversity, we emerge stronger and wiser.
