The event is organized by the National Academy of Science and Technology-Philippines, in cooperation with the Philippine National Ear Institute (PNEI), Newborn Hearing Screening Reference Center (NHSRC), and the UP Philippine General Hospital Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery,
Hearing loss has a profound impact on daily life. When hearing loss occurs at an early age (before speech development), it can impact significantly on the development of spoken language, literacy, and educational attainment, which can, in turn, affect employability. When it occurs at later stages in life, it has been shown that hearing loss can be associated with cognitive and functional decline, social isolation, and mortality.
The goal of the webinar is to develop recommendations in regard to the prevention of hearing loss-associated morbidity and mortality, taking into consideration learnings from the talks and discussions on congenital hearing loss, occupational hearing loss, and biomedical innovations in teleaudiology, as the basis for further elucidation of implementable actions and policies. For congenital hearing loss, the forum aims to formulate recommendations to further strengthen the implementation of the RA 9709 or the Universal Hearing Screening and Intervention Law, as well as to address the need to increase awareness of the impact of cognitive development deficits associated with congenital hearing loss. For occupational hearing loss, the forum aims to emphasize the need for hearing conservation programs in all industries with high noise exposures, from manufacturing, maritime, and music/entertainment industries. For hearing health technology research and development, the forum aims to address the gaps in technology in hearing health especially for those in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDA), and help draft recommendations on how our government can help stimulate and accelerate research activities in biomedical innovation, through assistance in regulatory processes and legislation.
