The Global South grapples with a myriad of complex challenges that remain understudied at the local level. While these issues have significant regional implications, their local manifestations are frequently overlooked due to a global research agenda that follows the dictates of the Global North. This neglect is further exacerbated by mainstream research methodologies that tend to shift the focus from in-depth theoretical exploration to myopic and superficial studies.
This trend, influenced by various social forces, compels researchers to conform to established methods and publication norms. The increasing corporatization of academia, prioritizing quantity over quality, stifles creativity and innovation. Researchers are confined to rigid, formulaic frameworks dictated by administrative demands and performance metrics. Nevertheless, a growing movement of resistance is challenging these conventional practices, creating space for alternative approaches. This collective push against standardized and commercialized research methods paves the way for innovative, contextually relevant strategies, reclaiming praxis and reimagining how knowledge production can bridge the gap between theory and practice.
As part of our ongoing DevStud Week 2024, the Development Studies Society invites everyone to our research workshop on alternative qualitative research methods, titled “Bridging Theory and Practice: Alternative Qualitative Methods towards Knowledge Co-creation,” featuring esteemed speakers Dr. Veronica Gregorio and Ms. Ida Marie Pantig. This event will be held on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the UP Manila Little Theater.
