The Simulation-Based Education (SBE) Guidebook Writeshop, themed “Optimizing Simulation-Based Education, Training, Collaboration, and Research: A Focus on Technology-Driven Teaching and Learning Strategies,” was held on October 10 and 11, 2024, in Manila. The event is part of a collaborative project of the Simulation Laboratory for Health Science Education (SIMULA) research group composed of representatives from various state colleges and universities (SUCs), with the initial purpose of finalizing and developing a research-based publishable manual to be used as a guideline for other institutions interested in establishing their simulation center or laboratory.

The SBE manual will comprise five modules: Module 1: Introduction to Simulation-Based Education, Module 2: Healthcare Simulation, Module 3: Types of Simulations, Module 4: Roles in Simulation, and Module 5: Simulation Center.

On the first day of the writeshop, distinguished faculty members from the University of the Philippines Manila (UPM), West Visayas State University (WVSU), and Mindanao State University – General Santos (MSU-GS) shared individual perspectives and inputs on the purpose of the proposed manual and discussed the future stakeholders and users who will be using the guidebook in setting up a health simulation center. As the collaborators revisited the proposed manual, they identified and aligned the important components the modules must have and share. They discussed the proper sequencing of the proposed modules, which could be independent or a prerequisite of another. The instructional SBE manual has two components: what is to be learned (curriculum), and how users will learn (instructional process).

“The goal of the module is to help users facilitate or set up a health simulation, and the objective is to equip you with the competencies needed to achieve your goal. Our goal is basically institutional, or how it will contribute to our institution, and the objective is for the individual who will use the manual,” said the facilitator, Dr. Nemuel Fajutagana, chair of the Office of Curriculum and Instruction of the UPM National Teacher Training Center for the Health Professions (NTTCHP).

The SBE guidebook writeshop is part of the collaborative project of the SIMULA research group, which is working on Optimizing Simulation-based Education, Training, Collaboration, and Research: A Focus on Technology-Driven Teaching and Learning Strategies. It was held from October 10-11, 2024, at Kimberly Hotel, Manila City. #
