The UP College of Medicine held a heartfelt Faculty Recognition Ceremony at the Ramon Ang Auditorium in Henry Sy Sr. Hall, commemorating the academic journey and contributions of thirteen distinguished faculty retirees. The event, held on March 5, 2024 provided an opportunity for the college community to celebrate the retirees’ outstanding careers and the lasting impact they have had on the field of medicine.

Welcoming the attendees, Dr. Charlotte M. Chiong, Dean of UPCM, emphasized that retirement is not the end but a transition to a new stage. She encouraged the retirees to choose activities that bring them joy and to consider returning to the college to pursue their passions. Dean Chiong highlighted the college’s commitment to fostering a community of scholars and passionate individuals dedicated to excellence and
service.
“Nais kong pasalamatan kayo because you guided us with your wisdom and mentorship,” said Dr. Michael L. Tee, Chancellor of UP Manila, expressed gratitude to the retirees, acknowledging their embodiment of the World Health Organization’s definition of a five-star physician. He assured them of streamlined processes for retirement benefits and emphasized the continued support of the university.

Dr. Gerardo D. Legaspi, Director of the Philippine General Hospital (PGH), shared exciting plans for the future and emphasized the need for the retirees’ continued involvement. He highlighted the breaking down of walls to create a more inclusive community.


Representing the retirees, Dr. Juanito Javier expressed heartfelt thanks for the recognition and shared reflections on their nearly four decades of service. He emphasized the resilience of their generation, and their “Can Do” mentality helped them overcome challenges from martial law to the recent pandemic. He asserted that retirees will continue contributing to health reform and advocacy despite their retirement.
The retirees from the UP College of Medicine who have left an indelible mark on their respective fields are the following: Dr. Jose Dante P. Dator, a renowned Urologist; Dr. Jaime F. Esquivel, a distinguished physician in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery; Dr. Catherine Jessica S. Mercado-Lazaro, a Clinical Associate Professor in Radiology; Dr. Herbert G. Uy, a pediatrician; and Ramon Magsaysay awardee Dr. Bernadette J. Madrid, also a pediatrician who was recognized for her role in uplifting child health and wellbeing. In Orthopedics, Dr. Juanito S. Javier, was recognized for pioneering a technique on limb
deformity correction; Dr. Adrian B. Catbagan, an accomplished orthopedic surgeon, and Dr. Norman M. Aquino, Chief of the Glaucoma Service, of the Philippine General Hospital.
The Obstetrics and Gynecology department also recognized the valuable contributions of its retirees: Dr. Ma. Bernadette R. Octavia, Dr. Elizabeth K. Jacinto, and Dr. Ricardo M. Manalastas Jr.
Dr. Lyn C. Almazan Gomez, a trailblazer in nephrology, and Department of Health Secretary Dr. Teodoro J. Herbosa, a visionary leader in Emergency Medicine, complete the roster of retirees.
In closing, Dr. Abner Chan, UPCM College Secretary, expressed gratitude for the retirees’ dedication and encouraged them to take pride in their role as educators who have positively influenced generations.

“Teachers are privileged to be able to touch and change lives on a daily basis. Given the ripple effect of teaching, there is no telling how far our influence reaches and it can never be erased because you have talked and mentored well and inspired your students. Your ultimate tribute is when someday your students become better versions of yourselves, said Dr. Abner Chan. ■
