SILab’s Dr. Alvin Marcelo emphasized the importance of having a clear policy and ethical framework in place before AI is widely used in healthcare.

The Standards and Interoperability Lab (SILab) attended the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST PHL)’s Roundtable Discussion (RTD) on Digital Health and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Healthcare from Feb. 25-26, 2025, at the Manila Prince Hotel. As a key initiative of the NAST’s Special Concerns Program Technical Working Group (TWG 9), focusing on advanced health technologies, the event gathered experts from government agencies, private hospitals, academia, and industry, including SILab’s Dr. Alvin Marcelo and AI specialist/data scientist John Eric Aggarao.

Concerned agencies were urged to consistently drive conversations on their roles in ensuring interoperability-–a sustained inter-agency dialogue is fundamental-–to which UPM SILab is committed to do, along alongside other stakeholders in laying the groundwork for future initiatives in health data governance, precision medicine, and national healthcare digitalization, ultimately driving the implementation of the Universal Healthcare (UHC).
