The Institute of Child Health and Human Development (ICHHD) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), together with Doctors Without Borders (MSF) and the Manila Health Department (MHD), is helping introduce a shorter four-month tuberculosis (TB) treatment for children. This new approach, based on WHO guidelines and approved by the DOH, makes it easier for families by reducing treatment time and hospital visits.
To support its rollout, ICHHD took part in a training workshop for doctors and nurses in Tondo, ensuring they are ready to provide the best care for young patients. Dr. Josephine Aldaba from ICHHD highlights that this shorter treatment can make it easier for children to complete their medication and recover faster.
A study by MSF’s research arm Epicentre, MHD, and ICHHD is looking at how well this new treatment works in the Philippines and Uganda. The goal is to understand the challenges and find solutions so more children worldwide can benefit. #
