Students take their oaths at the commencement exercises.
September 9, 2022 — Since two years of virtual graduations passed, this year marked UP Manila’s return to its traditional commencement ceremony for its 987 graduates that was held at the Philippine International Convention Center last August 2, 2022.
With the theme “Iskolar ng Bayan: Naninindigan para sa Katotohanan at Karapatan ng Mamamayan”, the 113th Commencement Exercises was also streamed live on UP Manila’s YouTube channel and Facebook page.
In her welcome remarks, UP Manila Chancellor Carmencita D. Padilla congratulated the graduates with pride and love. She lauded their bravery, perseverance, and intelligence; saying that their accomplishments are proof of their extraordinary abilities that can help them in facing any challenges ahead. She expressed her hopes that they would fight for truth and bear that undying spirit of serving the country in integrity while remembering to freely dream ahead.
“Hayaang maglayag ang isip at puso at makikita ninyo – dito magmumula ang mga gawaing magpapaunlad sa inyo at sa bayan.” (Let your minds and hearts set sail and you will see – this is where activities that can develop you and the country will come forth.) She assured the graduates of a home in UP Manila – a home that they hopefully would return to from time to time.
Meanwhile, UP President Danilo L. Concepcion, commencement address speaker, exhorted students towards selfless service with honor and excellence. The UP president encouraged the graduates to seek and share the truth and recalled how UP responded during the crisis where even lives were sacrificed. From community pantries to personal sacrifice of time and resources, Concepcion affirmed that the pandemic brought out the best of us and reminded the country why the Philippines “needs a UP, needs a UP Manila, and needs a UP-PGH”.
UP Manila also made history with the most number of laude awardees this year, 478 in all. There were 10 summa cum laude, 150 magna cum laude, and 318 cum laude graduates, a rare occasion prior to the pandemic days and days of old.
Tanya Corinne Sadsad David, BS Applied Physics summa cum laude, responding on behalf of Class 2022, exhorted the graduates towards a unified voice and into nation-building. “Ang lakas, talino, kaalaman at kasanayan ng bawat isa sa atin ay gamitin nating armas upang tulungang maiahon ang ating Inang Bayan. Gugulin natin nang kusang-loob ang ilang taon upang pagsilbihan ang ating bayan.” (Everyone’s strength, intelligence, knowledge, and training – use these as weapons in order to help uplift our Motherland. Willingly devote a number of years in the service of our country.)
UPM Officials and Faculty
David expressed confidence that the graduates can serve as the people’s voice, prompting them that even small steps are beginnings that can pave the way towards the future that their generation longs for.
The graduates pledged their loyalty to the alma mater. They were also inducted into the UP Alumni Association and into the UP Manila Alumni Association. Afterwards, a video showing the highlights of the day was shown on-screen where graduates could be heard cheering enthusiastically.
