
November 29, 2019 — UP Manila, through the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), hosted the 40th Humphrey Voices Series on November 22, 2019 that marked the 40th global anniversary of the Hubert Humphrey Fellowship.
Spearheaded by the Hubert H. Humphrey Alumni Philippines, the 40th Humphrey Voices Series entitled “Southeast Asia 4.0: Perspectives on the 21st Century” was held at the UP Manila Museum of a History of Ideas. It was attended by 35 Humphrey fellows from four countries with eight of them delivering lectures on varied issues reflecting the theme.
The Humphrey fellows-lecturers and their topics were as follows:
• Mr. Nabiel Hayaze (Indonesia), International Migration Challenges: A Reflection on the Case of Indonesia
• Prosecutor Darlene R. Pajarito (Philippines), Human Trafficking and the Southeast Asian Countries
• Mr. Ngoc Anh Nguyen (Vietnam), Gender-based Violence from the Closed Door to Action
• Dr. Vikki Delos Reyes (Philippines), Epidemic Intelligence in the 21st Century
• Atty. Avelino Tolentino III (Philippines), Urbanization Trends and the 4th Industrial Revolution
• Justice Maria Filomena Singh (Philippines), The ASEAN and the 4th Industrial Revolution: Administration of Justice in the Philippines (A Sector Approach)
• Senator Yusmadi Yusoff (Malaysia), Politics and Leadership: An Accidental Journey Through Law and Human Rights
• Ms. Corazon H. Ignacio (Brown University), Elections and Demoracy
The forum was attended by US Ambassador Sung Yong Kim, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, Philippine American Educational Foundation Executive Director Julio Amador III, Humphrey Alumni Philippines President Atty. Arnel Jose Bañas, and UP Manila Chancellor Carmencita Padilla, and CAS Dean Leonardo Estacio (a Humphrey fellow himself). It had an audience of 230 members representing the academe, police force, legislature, judiciary, local government, and nongovernmental groups.
The Humphrey Voice Series was established in honor of former US Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey who was a leading liberal voice in the US Senate focusing on issues of social welfare, civil rights, and fair employment. With data culled from the December 2019 PAC Report
