1st international IBON book launched at UP Manila
For those who would really like to know what it was like in
China during Chairman Mao Ze Dong’s time, there’s a new
book launched last May 26, 2009, at the College of Arts &
Sciences, UP Manila. The book, “Silage Choppers and
Snake Spirits: The Lives and Struggles of Two
Americans in Modern China”, by Ms. Dao-Yuan Chou,
is the biography of famous Dr. Joan Hinton (one of the
few female nuclear physicists who worked on the atom
bomb) and Erwin “Sid” Engst—Americans who chose to
work alongside ordinary Chinese people for more than 50
years. It also offers unusual insights into the events that
make up modern Chinese history from Liberation to the
Cultural Revolution.
“Silage Choppers and Snake Spirits” is the first international
publication by IBON Foundation, while Ms. Dao-Yuan, a
Chinese-American who lives in the US, is the first foreign
author accepted by the organization. The book is available at
IBON Foundation (Tel: +632 9277060 to 62 [loc. 301] and
Fax: +632 9292496).

2nd Quisumbing-Escandor Film Festival for Health (QEFF) for 2010
The contest is open to documentaries, short narratives, and experimental
films by amateur film-makers.
The festival is a tribute to Drs. Honorato L. Quisumbing and Juan B.
Escandor of the UP College of Medicine whose lives exemplified UP’s
and the medical profession’s ideal of service. Both were killed while
on duty—Dr. Quisumbing, while serving at the Philippine General Hospital
during World War II.; Dr. Escandor, while serving as a barrio doctor during
martial law (he was accused of being a rebel sympathizer).
Theme: “Sa ngalan ng ama, ng anak, at ng ina…”
It aims to put into the limelight maternal and child health issues in the
country—high mortality, poor hospital facilities, few health providers,
the cost of medicine, the Reproductive Health Bill, and many others.
Depict these issues as they interplay with political, socio-economic, cultural,
and other factors, capture them in film, and let our people and our leaders
awaken to some realities.
