    A new facility called "Learning Commons I" was recently inaugurated at the ground floor of the University Library in the presence of UP Pres. Alfredo Pascual, Chancellor Manuel Agulto, Vice Chancellors Jose Lapeña, Generoso Abes, Marie Josephine De Luna and Charlotte Chiong. Envisioned as a place where students and faculty can interact and collaborate to enhance learning and critical thinking skills, the LCI was provided with 28 iMac computers under the eUP project. It has a media viewing room with LCD projector and scanners and wi-fi services.

Colleagues, co-workers, students, and friends recall Dr. Quasi’s contributions to health reforms, such as Universal Health Care, Reproductive Health, passage of the Sin Tax Bill, and women’s health and gender equality.

    Dr. Paulo Antonio Sandico Silva, 2013 TOYM awardee and an ophthalmologist at the Beetham Eye Institute, Joshlin Diabetes Center, Boston MA was the keynote speaker during the UPM Scholars Convocation. With the country's problems getting more and more complex, he urged the scholars to not be complacent, to take the first step, engage others to maximize their abilities in taking their own first steps, and be more responsible for leading this nation forward.

Prof. Seedat has been fighting for peace and social justice and advocating equality, access to education, and the use of academic excellence in the pursuit of social responsibility. His visit was organized by the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Social Sciences and College of Public Health Department of Health Promotion.

    With the theme “Building a Legacy of Giving Back,” the UPM College of Dentistry celebrated its 99th foundation anniversary on February 3-7, 2014. The celebration was highlighted by the Grand Alumni Homecoming on February 7 attended by the faculty, administrative staff, students, and alumni of the College. During the program, the donors were cited and the topnotchers and passers of the Dec 2013 dental licensure examination were recognized.

    Dr. Domingo as RM Awardee. Dr. Ernesto Domingo (extreme right), National Scientist and University Professor Emeritus and former chancellor of UP Manila was one of the 2013 Ramon Magsaysay awardees on August 31 for embracing the social mission of medicine through his researches on liver diseases, particularly on Hepatitis B that led to the national government’s policy on mandatory immunization of Filipino children to protect them from the effects of this disease.

He is a University professor emeritus of the College of Medicine. He served as chancellor from 1988-1994 and as UP Faculty Regent from 1998-1999.

Dr. Raul Destura, director of the Institute of Biotechnology and Molecular Biology, National Institutes of Health, was chosen as one of seven recipients of the The Outstanding Youngman (TOYM) Award for 2011.

Launched last Nov. 28, 2011, at Rizal Ballroom A, Makati Shangr-La Hotel, the Philippine Genome Center (PGC) was established by the University of the Philippines to lead genome research in the country. The Center will focus on Health; Agriculture; Biodiversity for drug discovery and bio-energy; Forensics and Ethnicity; and, Ethical, Legal, and Social Issues associated with genomics research. To support genomic research within the University and in other academic/government/private industries, the Center will establish core facilities for DNA Sequencing, Bioinformatics, and Biobanking. More than half of those who took the licensure examination for chemists this month passed the test, the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) said yesterday.

For the past eight years, most countries in the world have been reporting a steady decrease in HIV/AIDS infection but the Philippines and six other nations have been recording an upward trend, a researcher from the University of the Philippines said.

After the excellent performance of UPCM and SHS-Palo in the physicians' board exam, the University is proud to announce that both the UP College Nursing and the UP School of Health Sciences-Leyte earned high marks in the July 2011 Nurse Licensure Examination.

Eight graduates from the UP College of Medicine made it to the Top Ten of the August 2011 Physician (Complete, Finals and Finals with Prelims) Licensure Examination given by the Board of Medicine this August 2011.

The Office of the UPM Vice Chancellor for Research (OVCR) and the University Library (UL) are developing a database of published and unpublished completed medical and health researches.
