CPH CELEBRATES  ITS 80th FOUNDING ANNIVERSARY

           The College of Public Health  celebrated its 80th Foundation Anniversary on June 26-27, 2008 with the theme “CPH: Four Scores of Excellence, Service and Leadership in Public Health”.  Special guests from SEAMEO partners and development agencies were  among those who  graced the occasion, bringing  to public notice CPH as a SEAMEO-TROPMED Center. 

 Highlight of the celebration was a tribute to Dr. Teodora V. Tiglao, an illustrious retired faculty member of the College.  She was awarded a Plaque of Recognition for her exemplary achievements and pioneering works that led to the advancement of public health education in the Philippines and for her unrelenting efforts in passing on her knowledge to her students, for both of which she has earned the title of Mother of Public Health Education in the Philippines”

 Other  activities that marked the foundation celebration included a memorial lecture in honor of the first dean of the college, presentations of various viewpoints on public health rendered by Dr. Soe Nyunt-U, WHO Representative to the Philippines (international perspective); Dr. Pratap Singhasivanon, Secretary-General of SEAMEO TROPMED Network (regional perspective); Health Secretary Francisco Duque who was represented by Undersecretary Mario Villaverde (national perspective) Dr. Milton Amayun, Vice President for Programs, International Aid (NGOs perspective) and Mayor Ma. Lourdes Fernando of Marikina City (LGUs perspective).  Two past Deans each gave their respective orations followed by the response of the present Dean, Dr. Nina G. Gloriani.   A thanksgiving dinner in recognition of CPH partners and donors through the years culminated the day’s activities.

 The following alumni also were awarded  plaques of recognition for their professional achievements:

1) Dr. Carmencita A. Banatin -  a graduate of Master of Hospital Administration  for her pioneering efforts in professionalizing health emergency management thus improving the level of awareness and preparedness of the government to emergencies and disaster.

 2) Dr. Permsiri Nitimanop -  a graduate of Master of Occupational Health and the first graduate of the Doctor of Public Health program of the college, for her unwavering endeavor in promoting the welfare of the children and youth through her publication, community works, involvement in NGOs and GOs and responsibilities in UNICEF.

        Second day of the celebration was held at the Traders Hotel. The activity was devoted to the alumni homecoming and the  election and induction into office of the new set of officers of the UP College of Public Health Alumni Society (UPCPHAS).  Elected Officers and Board Members for 2008-2009 were:

       Later in the afternoon, a program was held at CPH for the presentation of the College local Achievers Awards.  This was done side by side with “Simulaw” a yearly activity of the BSPH undergraduate students showcasing their talents.

       It was truly an auspicious occasion  to remember the institution’s glorious past, meet its present challenges and prepare for an equally memorable and remarkable future ahead.  This commemorative celebration at the same time becomes a fitting tribute to the University of the Philippines which is also marking its centenary this 2008.
