Center for Gender and Women Studies (CGWS) Director Anthony Cordero, MD will report the Center's accomplishments for 2006 in a meeting to be attended by coordinators of gender offices within the UP system on December 6. All coordinators are expected to report and participate in the planning for 2007 activities. CGWS finished the research, "Women and Men in UP Manila," a replication of the UP system-wide study by University Center for Women's Studies in 1995. The recent study showed that women consistently outnumbered men from top management down to administrative staff positions. Women also dominated all courses in the undergraduate and graduate levels last first semester of academic year 2006-2007. The said factsheet is useful for policy markers, researchers and students who are looking for gender-disaggregated data of UP Manila employees and students. Two representatives from UP Manila attended the seminar-workshop, "Introduction to Feminist Research Methodologies," sponsored by the UP Center for Women's Studies last November 7 and 8 at the Asian Center Conference Room, UP Diliman. Dr. Nina Castillo-Carandang, sociologist from the UP College of Medicine and UP Manila Gender Committee member, and Ms. Madel Montejo, research associate of the CGWS, were among the participants from different UP campuses as well as from other universities and non-government organizations (NGOs). Prof. Fatima Alvarez-Castillo, former director of the CGWS, was one of the speakers.
Dr. June Lopez, professor of the UP Department of Psychiatry and former director of the CGWS, had co-written the guide, "How to Conduct a Situation Analysis of Health Services for Survivors of Sexual Assault," published in August 2006 by the Sexual Violence Research Initiative (SVRI) based in South Africa. The said guide provides the tools for and outlines the steps on the conduct of a national situation analysis of sexual assault services. Dr. Lopez is a member of the World Health Organization (WHO) Gender Advisory Panel and the SVRI. Director Anthony Cordero gave a gender orientation for doctors and medical students of the PGH Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (PGH Dept. of OB-Gyne) on October 10, 2006. Dr. Virginia de Jesus, the department's chair, allotted the week's staff conference for the said orientation. Aside from Dr. Cordero, the other speaker was Dr. Betty Mancao, coordinator of the Office of Anti-Sexual Harassment (OASH). She explained the anti-sexual harassment laws and procedures of the university. After the presentations, a short forum followed. Dr. de Jesus then ended the activity, emphasizing that gender sensitivity is increasingly being recognized in the department. In fact, it was already part of the training program. De Jesus added that the very purpose of the orientation was to clearly define who we are and how we deal with each other to achieve a certain degree of equality especially in the health services. CGWS submitted to the World Health Organization (WHO) the final report for the project, "Field Testing the WHO Guidelines for Medico-Legal Care of Sexual Violence Survivors." The field test, which ran from January to October 2006, evaluated the guidelines' usefulness and applicability in the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) through a series of interviews, surveys, focus group discussions and training for the relevant units of the UP-PGH as well as other government agencies and non-government organizations. CGWS also finished the research, "Women and Men in UP Manila," a replication of the UP system-wide study by University Center for Women's Studies in 1995. The 2006 study showed that women consistently outnumber men from top management down to administrative staff positions. Women also dominated all courses in the undergraduate and graduate levels this first semester of academic year 2006-2007. The said research is being planned for widespread dissemination through print and electronic means.

After conducting a series of gender orientation and training over the last 4 months, the CGWS began a consultation with various colleges in August regarding the integration of gender in the curriculum. To date, the Center finished talks with the colleges of Allied Medical Professions, Arts and Sciences, Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy. The meetings revealed that both colleges had to be more familiar with basic gender concepts and how it can be successfully integrated in basic and major courses. Plans included the accomplishment of a gender courses survey distributed during the first quarter, sharing of reference materials on gender, submission of proposals to the curriculum committee, and roundtable discussion. The consultation with Public Health will be on September 27. A similar activity was initiated six years ago by the administration. The current goal is to review and update existing gender or gender-related courses in the curriculum and to develop plans of action for further institutionalizing this core program.
Dr. Anthony Cordero, director of the Center for Gender and Women Studies, conducted a gender sensitivity workshop for the 76 first year students of the College of Public Health (CPH) last August 2 at the CPH Auditorium. The workshop dealt with the topics on gender concepts, the link between gender and health and features of gender-sensitive health care. It also tackled sexual harassment. The methods used were short interactive lectures, role play and games. The said activity is part of the course, National Service Training Program (NSTP) 1. Dr. Arlene Bertuso is the college's NSTP coordinator. The nursing class of Mr. Dominic Paguio sponsored the seminar, "Pride: Live Loud and Proud," last July 21 at the College of Nursing auditorium. Speakers were Ms Danicar Mariano, press and media relations officer for lesbians of the party list, Ang Ladlad, Mr. Louie Mar Gangcuangco of INTARMED Class 2010 and author of the book, "Orosa-Nakpil-Malate", and Mr. Jeremiah Alejo, cum laude of Nursing Class 2005 and instructor at the Far Eastern University (FEU).
